What is Cupping Therapy?
This therapeutic and ancient alternative medicine treatment uses cup-like tools with local suction on the skin. The suction helps to provide a lift of the skin and facilitate a separation of the soft tissues that lay beneath. This separation creates space which promotes fluid movement amongst the circulatory and lymphatic system. The suction can range from gentle to deep and can help with pain, tension, and restriction found in the soft tissues of the body.

How does it work?
When toxins or cell waste stagnate in the muscles and connective tissues, the body has a difficult time disposing the waste causing the body to experience discomfort and pain. The stagnation can be caused by a number of different reasons, such as poor circulation in a localized area, Qi (energy) blockage, or an injury that never fully healed.
When the liver and kidneys are not able to process these insults to the system and excrete them correctly, the toxins are put in storage to be handled at a later time -- usually stored in the muscles.
The negative pressure or vacuum action of cupping quickly facilitates the release of rigid soft tissues, stimulates the peripheral nervous system, loosens and lifts connective tissue, breaks up and drains stagnation. It also has the ability to increase blood and lymph flow to the skin, muscle and connective tissue.
Cupping draws stagnant blood and other fluids that have fallen out of healthy circulation up to the skin and away from the injury to restore circulation to the affected area. It creates space for oxygen, living cells and nutrients needed for the healing process. The capillary system of the skin carries the toxins to the liver and kidneys where they are then metabolized and excreted.
How are the cups applied?
Cupping therapy involves the placement of cups on the skin and creating suction within these cups. This ancient practice has utilized cups of various materials such as glass, plastic, bamboo, silicone, animal horns and ceramic. Suction is achieved in different ways such as hand-held air pumps, machines, and fire.
There are two forms of cupping therapy which includes, Dry Cupping and Wet Cupping
-
dry cupping, which is a suction-only method
-
wet cupping, which may involve both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding
Does it hurt?
The marks generally left behind after traditional cupping often provokes the fear of pain. The truth is that cupping is not typically painful although there may be moments of pressure being felt. It truly is an experience that feels better than it looks.
How long do the marks last?
On average the marks left after cupping can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. We typically see them get their darkest within 72 hours of treatment and start to fade thereafter. Most cases see the marks fade completely within 14 days. With this being said we ask that social events be kept in mind when booking cupping treatments.
